Variceal Bleeding: A Life-Threatening Condition

Variceal bleeding occurs due to the rupture of esophageal or gastric varices, often associated with portal hypertension. This condition is commonly seen in patients with liver cirrhosis, affecting approximately 60% to 65% of those experiencing GI bleeding. Portal hypertensive gastropathy may also contribute to this type of bleeding. Due to its high mortality rate, prompt diagnosis and specialized treatment strategies are essential.

Non-Variceal Bleeding: Common Causes and Considerations

Non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding is more prevalent and is most frequently caused by peptic ulcer disease involving the stomach or duodenum. Other contributing factors include gastric mucosal erosions, reflux esophagitis, Mallory-Weiss syndrome (esophageal or gastroesophageal mucosal tears), and malignant tumors.

Less Common Causes of Upper GI Bleeding

While less common, other potential causes should not be overlooked. These include biliary tract injuries, aortic aneurysms rupturing into the upper GI tract, and coagulopathy-related bleeding. Although rare, these conditions require careful evaluation and targeted interventions to prevent complications and ensure optimal recovery.
