Omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI), is commonly prescribed for the treatment of duodenal ulcers. The standard recommended duration for omeprazole therapy typically ranges from 4 to 6 weeks. However, in certain cases—especially when dealing with larger or more complex ulcers—the treatment period may be extended up to 8 weeks to ensure complete healing.

Some patients may present with multiple ulcers in the duodenum, while others may have a combination of gastric and duodenal ulcers, known as compound ulcers. Failing to complete the full course can result in incomplete healing, irregular ulcer appearance, and potentially lead to complications such as duodenal stricture, scarring, adhesions, or even obstruction, which can hinder long-term recovery.

Post-Treatment Evaluation

It's also important to note that after completing H. pylori eradication therapy, patients should wait at least two weeks after discontinuing omeprazole before undergoing any follow-up tests to confirm bacterial clearance. This waiting period ensures accurate test results and avoids false negatives due to the suppressive effects of the medication.
