How Many Days of Hospitalization Are Required for Minimally Invasive Lithotripsy

Minimally invasive lithotripsy typically requires a hospital stay of 5 to 7 days. This procedure is often recommended for patients who were not successfully treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. In minimally invasive lithotripsy, a small incision is made on the back, and a specialized instrument is used to deliver a holmium laser directly onto the surface of the stone, effectively breaking it into smaller fragments that can be passed out of the body.

The success rate of this procedure is relatively high due to the direct targeting of the stone. For ureteral stones, the procedure can be performed by inserting a ureteroscope through the bladder and into the ureter to reach the stone. During the procedure, there may be minor damage to the surrounding tissues, which is why patients are advised to stay in the hospital for 5 to 7 days after surgery.

During this time, patients are typically given anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling and manage pain. It is important to monitor the color of the urine, as the presence of red blood cells may indicate injury to the kidney or ureter. If blood is detected in the urine, patients should drink plenty of water and rest in bed to promote healing.

After 5 to 7 days, if there are no complications and the urine appears normal, the patient can be discharged. However, recovery does not end at discharge. Patients should continue to avoid strenuous physical activity and maintain a high fluid intake to help flush out any remaining stone fragments and prevent the formation of new stones.

Proper post-operative care significantly improves recovery outcomes and reduces the risk of complications. Following the surgeon's instructions closely and attending follow-up appointments is essential for a full and smooth recovery.
