Can People with Cholecystitis Eat Tomatoes?
Tomatoes are generally safe for individuals with cholecystitis. Cholecystitis, or inflammation of the gallbladder, is most commonly caused by gallstones. These stones form due to an imbalance between cholesterol and bile acids. Tomatoes, which can be consumed either as a fruit or a vegetable, are rich in vitamin C and do not contribute to bacterial infections in the gastrointestinal tract or disrupt the balance between bile acids and cholesterol.
Cholecystitis is primarily triggered by gallstones irritating the gallbladder wall. This often leads to mechanical inflammation. In other cases, secondary bacterial infections may occur, resulting in more severe symptoms. Common signs include pain or discomfort in the upper right abdomen or a feeling of fullness in the upper abdominal region.
Some patients may also experience referred pain in the right shoulder blade area. Whether or not this radiating pain occurs varies from person to person. Managing diet, including incorporating foods like tomatoes, can play a supportive role in reducing flare-ups and maintaining gallbladder health.
