Gallbladder Inflammation Pain Characteristics

Gallbladder inflammation, or cholecystitis, typically presents with distinct pain characteristics that help in diagnosing the condition. The most common symptom is tenderness in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen. This pain often comes with rebound tenderness, which means the pain worsens when pressure is released from the area. A key diagnostic sign is a positive Murphy's sign, where the patient experiences sharp pain during a specific physical examination maneuver.

To test for Murphy's sign, the examiner places their fingers along the outer edge of the right rectus abdominis muscle. As the patient inhales deeply, the gallbladder moves downward and comes into contact with the examiner's fingers, causing pain. If the rectus abdominis is difficult to locate, the examiner may follow a line extending downward from the right midclavicular line to where it intersects with the ribs.

Referred pain is another notable feature of gallbladder inflammation. Patients may feel pain radiating to the back or the right shoulder area. This discomfort is often accompanied by a fever, indicating an inflammatory response in the body.

Imaging studies such as ultrasound are crucial in confirming the diagnosis. These scans may reveal gallbladder wall thickening, edema, and surrounding fluid accumulation—common indicators of inflammation.

In terms of treatment, surgical removal of the gallbladder is the most effective solution. Known as a cholecystectomy, this procedure helps alleviate symptoms and prevents future complications. Once the gallbladder is removed, most patients experience significant relief from pain and related symptoms.
