Foods That People With Cholecystitis and Gallstones Should Avoid

If you suffer from cholecystitis or gallstones, it's important to be mindful of your diet. Consuming high-fat and high-cholesterol foods can trigger painful flare-ups and worsen your condition. This includes greasy, fried, spicy, and overly processed meals. Foods such as organ meats, dried nuts, seeds, caviar, and creamy sauces should also be avoided due to their high fat content.

Fatty cuts of meat, especially pork, can be particularly harmful and should be limited or eliminated from your diet. Spicy ingredients like chili peppers may also irritate the digestive system, so it's best to minimize their consumption. Similarly, nuts and seeds—though often considered healthy—contain concentrated fats that can cause discomfort and should be eaten sparingly, if at all.

Another key point to consider is the cholesterol content in egg yolks. People with gallbladder issues should avoid egg yolks to reduce strain on the gallbladder. Alcohol and rich dishes like roasted duck should also be consumed rarely, if at all, as they can contribute to inflammation and digestive distress.

On the other hand, a balanced, low-fat diet is recommended for managing gallbladder health. Fresh vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins like fish, shrimp, and skinless poultry are excellent choices. These foods provide essential nutrients without overburdening the digestive system.

It's also wise to avoid animal skins and organ meats, as well as heavy soups like bone broth and pork rib soup, which can be high in fat. Instead, opt for light, vegetable-based broths that are easier on the gallbladder and promote better digestion.
