Treatment Options for Gastric Teratomas

Gastric teratomas are extremely rare in clinical practice. These tumors typically occur in areas such as the retroperitoneum and pelvis, with very few cases reported in the stomach itself. However, they may occasionally appear in the retroperitoneal area behind the stomach. When diagnosed, surgical removal is usually the first-line treatment, and in many cases, complete resection through surgery can offer a potential cure.

Teratomas are generally classified into two types: mature (benign) and immature (malignant). Malignant teratomas exhibit aggressive biological behavior, often leading to compression and invasion of nearby organs. Due to this invasive nature, prompt and radical surgical excision is strongly recommended for malignant cases to prevent further complications and improve prognosis.

In most cases, teratomas do not respond well to chemotherapy or other non-surgical treatments. As a result, these modalities are often ineffective in achieving optimal outcomes. Therefore, early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention are crucial for patients diagnosed with gastric teratomas.
