How to Choose the Right Sleeping Position for Bile Reflux Gastritis
Bile reflux gastritis occurs when bile from the small intestine flows back into the stomach, often due to slow gastrointestinal motility or poor digestive function. This condition can cause discomfort such as upper abdominal pain, a burning sensation, or even chest pain behind the breastbone.
One of the most effective lifestyle adjustments is elevating the upper body during sleep by 15° to 30°. This slight incline helps prevent bile from flowing back into the stomach and reduces nighttime symptoms.
Doctors often recommend sleeping on your left side, as this position supports natural digestion and minimizes reflux. In contrast, lying flat or on your right side may increase the likelihood of bile regurgitation.
In addition to sleep position, dietary and behavioral habits play a key role in managing bile reflux. It's best to avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after eating. Instead, remain upright or take a gentle walk to aid digestion. Also, avoiding spicy, fried, and fatty foods can significantly reduce the frequency and severity of symptoms.
While left-side sleeping is preferred, there is no strict rule about other sleeping positions. However, combining good sleep posture with healthy eating and lifestyle habits can make a noticeable difference in managing bile reflux gastritis effectively.
