Jaundice In The Eyes Of Hepatitis Patients: Understanding The Causes

Hepatitis patients often experience a yellowing of the eyes, medically known as conjunctival icterus. This condition is typically accompanied by yellowing of the skin and is primarily caused by elevated levels of bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is a yellow pigment produced during the normal breakdown of red blood cells, and when it accumulates in the body, it can cause the skin and mucous membranes—including the whites of the eyes—to take on a yellowish hue.

Elevated bilirubin levels can be detected through blood tests and liver function tests. When bilirubin levels rise, it often indicates an issue with the liver or bile ducts. There are several underlying causes for this increase, including liver cell damage and impaired bile excretion.

Hepatocellular jaundice occurs when liver cells are damaged or destroyed. This can happen due to active hepatitis viruses that attack and destroy liver cells, leading to the release of excess bilirubin into the bloodstream. In such cases, the liver's ability to process and remove bilirubin is significantly compromised.

Cholestatic jaundice is another possible cause, resulting from bile flow obstruction. Conditions such as autoimmune liver diseases can interfere with the normal excretion of bile, causing it to accumulate in the bile ducts and gallbladder. When bile cannot flow properly into the intestines, it may back up into the bloodstream, raising bilirubin levels and causing jaundice.

In addition, physical obstructions like gallstones or tumors can block the bile ducts. These blockages prevent bile from reaching the intestines, forcing bilirubin to build up in the blood and leading to visible yellowing of the skin and eyes.
