The Prognosis of Subacute Severe Hepatitis

Subacute severe hepatitis refers to a condition where symptoms of severe hepatitis persist beyond two to three weeks. In cases where patients experience a continuous rise in bilirubin levels, reaching 400–500 μmol/L or even as high as 600–700 μmol/L, the prognosis tends to be poor. Such patients may develop serious complications including gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, and ascites. Close monitoring of biochemical markers and clinical symptoms is crucial in assessing disease progression and guiding treatment decisions.

However, with timely and comprehensive treatment—including basic supportive care, artificial liver support therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine—the disease may stabilize during the subacute phase. If bilirubin levels begin to decline and the patient's energy levels gradually return, the overall prognosis becomes more favorable. Improvement in appetite and general well-being also indicates a positive recovery trend. Early intervention and multidisciplinary treatment significantly enhance the chances of a better outcome. Therefore, it is essential for patients to receive individualized care and consistent medical follow-up throughout the recovery process.
