To diagnose alcoholic liver disease, doctors typically rely on a combination of the patient's medical history, imaging tests, and blood work. A key factor in diagnosis is a detailed history of alcohol consumption, as individuals often have a long-term history of heavy drinking and may also show signs of alcohol dependence.

From an imaging perspective, ultrasound and CT scans of the liver are commonly used. These tests can reveal diffuse changes in liver tissue. However, these findings are not specific to alcoholic liver disease and cannot be used alone to confirm the diagnosis.

In terms of blood tests, liver function tests are essential. Elevated levels of liver enzymes such as ALT and AST, or increased bilirubin levels, may indicate liver damage. When these blood test results are abnormal, along with a relevant medical history and imaging findings, it strongly suggests the presence of alcoholic liver injury.
