How To Treat Gastropexy
Gastropexy, or a prolapsed stomach, occurs when the diaphragm lacks sufficient strength to support internal organs, the ligaments that hold the organs become loose, or when there's a decrease in abdominal pressure and weakened abdominal muscles. This condition causes the stomach's larger curvature to descend into the pelvic cavity when standing, and the lowest point of the stomach's smaller curve drops below the line connecting the iliac crests. It is often accompanied by a displacement of the duodenal bulb. In a healthy individual, the stomach is located in the upper left part of the abdominal cavity. When standing, its lowest point should not extend more than two finger-widths below the navel and should remain relatively fixed, which is essential for normal gastric function. Factors that can lead to a drop in diaphragm position, such as reduced diaphragmatic mobility, decreased intra-abdominal pressure, weak abdominal muscles, or overly relaxed ligaments like the gastrohepatic, gastrosplenic, or gastrocolic ligaments, can all contribute to gastropexy.
Treatment for gastropexy primarily involves functional exercises and dietary adjustments. Since individuals with this condition often experience weakened digestion, consuming large amounts of food can lead to indigestion. It's important to eat smaller meals more frequently—about 4 to 6 times a day. Regular physical activity, especially exercises that target the abdominal muscles, is highly recommended. For those without access to fitness equipment, simple exercises like sit-ups can be effective.
A balanced diet consisting of easily digestible, nutrient-rich foods is essential for recovery. After eating, it's advised to lie down for about 45 minutes to reduce the strain on the stomach and minimize the time spent standing. This helps the digestive system function more efficiently. Additionally, patients should avoid overexertion and prolonged physical strain, as these can worsen the condition.
Incorporating lifestyle changes such as proper posture, core strengthening, and mindful eating habits plays a crucial role in managing and improving gastropexy symptoms. By combining these dietary and physical strategies, patients can significantly enhance their quality of life and promote better digestive health.
