Post-Operative Dietary Guidelines for Esophageal Cancer Patients

After undergoing surgery for esophageal cancer, it is crucial to follow a carefully planned diet to support healing and reduce complications. During the first 3 to 4 days after surgery, patients should remain on a strict fast, allowing the digestive system to recover.

By the fifth day, patients can begin consuming a residue-free liquid diet, such as clear broths or specialized nutritional drinks. On day six, rice water or thin rice porridge can be introduced as a gentle source of energy and nutrients. By day seven, chicken soup and soft rice may be included in the diet to provide essential proteins and calories.

Around two weeks post-surgery, soft, semi-liquid foods become appropriate for consumption, marking a key step in dietary recovery. During this early phase, meals should focus on being high in protein, nutrient-dense, and easy to digest. It is essential to gradually transition back to a regular diet under medical guidance.

Avoiding overly hot, hard, spicy, or irritating foods is strongly advised, as these can hinder healing and cause discomfort. Additionally, incorporating light physical activity into daily routines can help maintain regular bowel movements and overall well-being.
