Liver Cancer Diet: What to Eat for Better Health

When managing liver cancer, dietary choices play a crucial role in supporting overall health and improving quality of life. Alcohol consumption should be completely avoided, including both hard liquor and beer. In addition, patients should limit their intake of greasy and high-fat foods, as well as avoid raw or cold dishes like cold cuts, which may lead to intestinal infections.

For patients with relatively good liver function, a balanced diet rich in protein and vitamins is recommended. This includes foods such as milk, eggs, lean meats, fish, tofu, fresh fruits, and especially leafy green vegetables. Carbohydrates should be consumed in moderation to maintain energy levels without overburdening the liver.

In cases of decompensated liver function or jaundice, a light and easily digestible diet is essential. Patients should aim to consume enough calories and include moderate amounts of protein. Recommended foods include rice porridge, noodles, and steamed vegetables. These provide necessary nutrients while being gentle on the liver.

For individuals with esophageal or gastric varices, high-fiber foods can help prevent constipation and reduce pressure on the veins. Vegetables like celery and lettuce are excellent choices. However, it's important to avoid fried or hard-to-digest foods that could cause internal irritation or bleeding.

Patients with cirrhosis who are at risk of developing liver cancer should focus on soft, low-residue, and easily digestible meals such as noodles, minced meat, and vermicelli. Hard or crunchy foods like pancakes should be avoided to prevent potential gastrointestinal bleeding. In advanced cases where hepatic encephalopathy occurs, protein intake should be carefully controlled to avoid worsening neurological symptoms.
