Liver Cancer in Advanced Stages: Will It Always Cause Pain?

About 70% to 80% of patients with advanced liver cancer experience persistent pain. However, it's important to note that a small number of individuals may not feel any pain, even during the final stages of the disease. The presence of pain is largely influenced by the tumor's location within the liver. If the tumor is located away from the liver capsule and hasn't invaded it, the pain may not be significant.

When the cancer spreads beyond the liver, particularly to the bones, patients may experience pain at the site of metastasis. Bone pain is a common symptom when liver cancer spreads to the skeletal system. In cases where there is no bone involvement, pain may remain minimal or even absent.

Regardless of whether pain is present, advanced liver cancer can cause significant discomfort. Patients often develop large amounts of ascites, leading to noticeable abdominal swelling and bloating. If the cancer spreads to the abdominal cavity, bloating can become especially severe.

Additionally, toxins produced by the tumor or metabolic byproducts from dying cancer cells can cause general body discomfort. Patients may feel fatigued, uneasy, or irritable. These symptoms are common and can significantly impact quality of life.

In terms of treatment, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help manage mild to moderate pain. For more severe symptoms, including widespread discomfort, doctors may prescribe opioid-based medications to provide relief and improve the patient's overall well-being. Proper pain management is essential in improving the quality of life for patients with advanced liver cancer.
