Can People Without Hepatitis B Develop Liver Cancer?

Many people assume that only those with hepatitis B are at risk for liver cancer, but the truth is more complex. Liver cancer can affect individuals who have never contracted hepatitis B. This disease develops due to a combination of various risk factors, which can impact liver health over time.

One of the main contributors to liver cancer is chronic liver inflammation, most commonly caused by hepatitis B and C. In China, hepatitis B is especially prevalent, with around 80% of liver cancer cases linked to this infection. While hepatitis C is less common in China, it still poses a significant risk and is more widespread in countries like Japan.

Another major factor is exposure to harmful substances. Dietary toxins such as aflatoxins—found in moldy peanuts and corn—can significantly increase the risk of liver cancer. Additionally, regular consumption of grilled or charred foods, which may contain carcinogens, and excessive alcohol intake can lead to alcoholic liver disease and cirrhosis. Moreover, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, often associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, has also been linked to liver cancer development.

Physical and structural issues within the liver can also play a role. Conditions like intrahepatic bile duct stones or chronic liver parasite infections can cause long-term irritation and inflammation, increasing the likelihood of developing liver tumors.

To reduce the risk of liver cancer, it is important to avoid known liver toxins, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and undergo regular medical check-ups, especially for those with existing liver conditions. By understanding and addressing these risk factors, individuals can take proactive steps toward liver health.
