Can Chronic Colitis Lead to Colon Cancer?

Chronic colitis does not necessarily progress to colon cancer, and in most cases, it does not. Some patients may experience recurring symptoms, but since the inflammation is not always present, the risk of cancer remains relatively low. If the condition is caused by an infection, appropriate treatment targeting the pathogen can often lead to full recovery.

However, there are specific situations where the risk of cancer is higher:

1. Chronic Colitis with Polypoid Growth

Individuals with a family history of polyps are more susceptible to developing adenomatous polyps, which can become cancerous if left untreated. These growths may run in families and require timely medical intervention to prevent malignant transformation.

2. Long-standing Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Patients who have had inflammatory bowel disease for many years face a higher risk of colon cancer. The persistent inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract over time increases the likelihood of malignant changes compared to the general population.

3. Inflammatory Bowel Disease with Inflammatory Polyps

In some cases, patients develop inflammatory polyps alongside chronic inflammation. If these polyps remain in the colon for a prolonged period, they may also carry a risk of becoming cancerous.
