Men are less commonly affected, but they are not immune. Men with diets low in animal-based iron sources—such as meat and poultry—or those experiencing undetected gastrointestinal bleeding due to ulcers, colon polyps, or other digestive disorders may also develop this condition over time.

Doctors typically diagnose iron deficiency anemia through blood tests that measure hemoglobin levels, serum ferritin (a marker of iron storage), and other iron-related parameters. Once confirmed, treatment usually involves oral iron supplements, which can lead to a noticeable increase in hemoglobin levels within weeks.
However, simply taking iron pills is not enough for long-term recovery. It's essential to identify and address the underlying cause—whether it's excessive blood loss, poor diet, or an undiagnosed gastrointestinal condition. Without treating the root issue, the anemia is likely to return even after initial improvement.
Prevention and Long-Term Health
Preventing recurrence involves sustainable lifestyle and dietary changes. Increasing intake of heme-iron sources (like lean meats and seafood), pairing plant-based iron foods with vitamin C-rich options (such as oranges or bell peppers) to enhance absorption, and avoiding iron blockers during meals can make a significant difference.
In some cases, intravenous iron therapy may be recommended, especially for patients who cannot tolerate oral supplements or have severe deficiencies due to chronic blood loss.
With proper diagnosis, targeted treatment, and ongoing management, iron deficiency anemia is highly treatable and often fully reversible. Maintaining awareness of personal risk factors and seeking timely medical advice are key steps toward lasting health and vitality.
