Can GERD Cause Coughing?

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach contents flow back into the esophagus, causing inflammation and a range of symptoms such as chest pain, acid regurgitation, or heartburn. While coughing is not a direct symptom of reflux esophagitis, it can manifest as an extraesophageal manifestation of GERD, often referred to as reflux-related cough.

If a persistent cough is suspected to be linked to gastroesophageal reflux, it's important to confirm the presence of GERD through diagnostic evaluations. One common method is a 24-hour pH monitoring test in the esophagus, which helps assess the frequency and severity of acid reflux episodes.

Once GERD is diagnosed and the cough is associated with it, respiratory specialists may apply specific criteria for identifying reflux-induced chronic cough. Proper diagnosis allows for targeted treatment strategies that address both the underlying reflux and the associated respiratory symptoms.
