How to Diagnose Chronic Gastritis in Children

Recognizing the Symptoms of Chronic Gastritis

Chronic gastritis in children often begins with identifying common symptoms. Most cases present with abdominal or stomach pain, although some children may struggle to pinpoint the exact location of discomfort and simply describe it as a general belly ache. This can be accompanied by bloating, nausea, belching, acid reflux, or even vomiting. These digestive disturbances are often signs pointing toward some form of gastric inflammation. Additionally, other indicators such as bad breath or a thick coating on the tongue may also be observed.

Non-Invasive Diagnostic Options for Younger Children

For children over the age of four, a non-invasive diagnostic tool called a gastric electrogastrography (or gastric EGG) can be used. This method measures the electrical activity of the stomach and is well tolerated by most children since it's painless and doesn't require any invasive procedures. While it may not provide a definitive diagnosis, it can help doctors assess whether there's an underlying gastric issue that needs further attention.

Advanced Diagnostic Methods for Older Children

In older children who have experienced persistent or more pronounced symptoms, a more direct diagnostic approach is recommended. A gastroscopy allows physicians to visually examine the lining of the stomach using a small camera inserted through the esophagus. This procedure helps identify signs of inflammation, swelling, or erosion in the stomach lining.

Testing for H. pylori Infection

Additionally, if Helicobacter pylori infection is suspected, a carbon-13 urea breath test can be performed. This non-invasive test helps detect the presence of the bacteria, which is known to contribute to chronic gastritis in some cases. By combining the results of these tests with clinical observations, a comprehensive diagnosis can be made, allowing for a targeted treatment plan tailored to the child's specific condition.
