Belching, also known as burping, occurs when gas from the gastrointestinal tract rises into the upper digestive system, causing discomfort. This is a common issue that can be triggered by various factors. Below are some of the most frequent causes:
1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is the leading cause. When stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, it can lead to increased belching as the body tries to relieve pressure in the stomach.
2. Stress and anxiety play a significant role. Emotional distress can affect digestion and increase the frequency of belching. Many patients report more symptoms during high-pressure periods.
3. Poor eating and lifestyle habits contribute to digestive discomfort. Eating large portions, consuming fatty or hard-to-digest foods, drinking carbonated beverages, or eating too quickly can all result in excessive gas buildup and belching.
