Can Indigestion Cause Weight Gain?

Most individuals suffering from chronic indigestion tend to be on the thinner side, especially those who experience frequent diarrhea after eating. This is often due to poor nutrient absorption caused by ongoing digestive issues. Whether or not a person gains weight depends largely on the balance between calorie intake and energy expenditure. When the calories consumed significantly exceed those burned, the excess energy is stored as fat—commonly accumulating under the skin, in the liver, or around internal organs, which can lead to weight gain or obesity. In general, people with chronic indigestion are less likely to become overweight.

Digestive discomfort and post-meal diarrhea are sometimes attributed to weakened digestion, commonly referred to as "spleen deficiency" in traditional Chinese medicine. Many individuals with such conditions often have a history of overeating or consuming foods that strain the digestive system, leading to impaired function over time. Surprisingly, some of these individuals may have originally been overweight. Eating cold or greasy foods can trigger diarrhea and worsen symptoms, which may also fall under the category of indigestion.

While most people with indigestion tend to be slim, it's still possible for others who are naturally heavier to suffer from similar digestive problems. Therefore, body weight alone isn't always an accurate indicator of digestive health. Maintaining a balanced diet, managing food sensitivities, and supporting overall gut health are key to improving digestion regardless of body type.
