Will Eating Soybeans Cause Indigestion?

Consuming soybeans generally does not lead to indigestion. However, some individuals may experience increased gas production after eating soybeans and soy-based products such as edamame, soy milk, tofu pudding, and soybean curd skin. This can result in bloating and more frequent flatulence. If bowel movements remain regular and well-formed, it's usually a sign that digestion is functioning normally and there's no serious gastrointestinal disturbance.

The main reason for gas buildup is the bacterial breakdown of soybeans in the intestines, which naturally occurs in many people. Similar effects can be seen with other high-starch foods like sweet potatoes and chestnuts, which also tend to produce more gas during digestion.

Discontinuing soybean consumption for a short period often helps alleviate symptoms, as the accumulated gas is gradually expelled from the body. In most cases, no medical treatment is necessary. It's important, however, to be cautious about consuming spoiled soy products—such as old soy milk or fermented tofu—as this can lead to foodborne illness, causing nausea, diarrhea, or vomiting.
