Can You Drink Soup With Pancreatitis?

During the acute phase of pancreatitis, patients should not consume soup or even water. If experiencing extreme thirst, it is recommended to rinse the mouth or moisten the lips to stay comfortable.

In the acute stage, medical treatment typically involves fasting, gastric decompression, acid suppression, enzyme secretion inhibition, anti-inflammatory medications, and fluid replacement. These supportive measures help reduce the strain on the pancreas and promote recovery. Once the condition stabilizes and symptoms improve, dietary reintroduction can begin cautiously.

Initially, patients should start with fat-free liquid foods such as rice water or plain boiled water. As the body adjusts, they can gradually transition to fat-free semi-liquid meals like steamed rice porridge or millet porridge. Only after entering the recovery phase should patients consider introducing low-fat semi-liquid or liquid meals into their diet.

At this point, carefully selected soups can be included, provided they are prepared using light cooking methods and contain minimal fat. Examples include tomato egg-drop soup, seaweed egg-drop soup, or winter melon and clam soup. It's crucial to avoid high-fat ingredients and overly rich broths that could trigger a flare-up.

Throughout the recovery process, maintaining a balanced and gentle diet is key. Patients must avoid overeating and steer clear of fatty, greasy foods that place extra stress on the pancreas. Making mindful food choices supports long-term healing and reduces the risk of future complications.
