How Serious Are Pancreatic Duct Stones

Pancreatic duct stones are a chronic condition often associated with pancreatitis, particularly in individuals suffering from chronic pancreatitis. This condition commonly affects those who have habits such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, or are obese—factors that contribute to the development of chronic pancreatitis. These stones can cause intermittent or persistent abdominal pain, and if they block the pancreatic duct, they can increase pressure within the duct and damage the pancreatic tissue.

If left untreated, this blockage may lead to pancreatic atrophy, which can worsen the overall condition, although it is not immediately life-threatening. Therefore, timely intervention is important to prevent further deterioration of pancreatic function and to relieve symptoms.

When it comes to treatment options for pancreatic duct stones, there are several approaches available including conservative management, surgical removal via pancreatic duct incision, and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy. However, the most effective and minimally invasive method is ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography).

This procedure involves using a duodenoscope to access the pancreatic duct, where a guidewire is inserted followed by a stone extraction balloon to remove the stones into the duodenum. This helps reduce pancreatic duct pressure and resolves the obstruction, offering both symptom relief and improved pancreatic function.
