Additionally, 75% alcohol solutions are widely used for skin and equipment sanitization and have proven efficacy against TB germs.

Heat and UV Light as Powerful Disinfectants

Thermal treatment is highly effective: heating to 52–53°C for at least 30 minutes will destroy the bacteria, while boiling water kills them instantly. Similarly, controlled ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for 30 minutes is a reliable method used in hospitals and laboratories to sterilize air and surfaces, helping prevent nosocomial spread of TB.

One reason tuberculosis remains a global health concern is the bacterium's ability to linger in the environment. It can float in dust particles for several days, maintaining its infectious potential. Its slow growth rate and stealthy nature allow it to go undetected, increasing the likelihood of transmission—especially in crowded or poorly ventilated areas like shelters, prisons, or urban slums.

Preventive Measures for High-Risk Situations

When traveling to or living in regions with high TB prevalence, taking preventive steps is crucial. Wearing a well-fitted respirator mask (such as N95) in enclosed or crowded environments can significantly reduce inhalation risk. This becomes even more important during colder months when people spend more time indoors with limited airflow.

Early Detection and Medical Response

If you experience symptoms such as prolonged low-grade fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or a persistent cough, it's essential to seek medical evaluation promptly. Diagnostic tools including chest CT scans and the tuberculin skin test (TST) or interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) can help confirm TB infection.
