Preparing for a Gastroscopy: Essential Guidelines

Follow these important steps to ensure a smooth and accurate gastroscopy experience.

Before undergoing a gastroscopy, it's crucial to properly prepare your body to allow the doctor to get clear images and accurate results. Here are several key points to keep in mind:

1. Fast before the procedure

Make sure you have an empty stomach before the exam. Eating beforehand can obstruct the view inside your stomach, making it difficult for the physician to detect any abnormalities. Typically, you should avoid eating or drinking for at least 6–8 hours prior to the procedure.

2. Watch your dinner timing and choices

On the evening before your gastroscopy, avoid eating late. Opt for a light, easily digestible meal such as steamed vegetables, rice, or toast. Heavy or greasy foods may delay digestion and interfere with the examination.

3. Avoid certain medications temporarily

If you're taking strong acid-suppressing drugs like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs), it's best to stop them a few days before the test, especially if there's a possibility of testing for Helicobacter pylori. These medications can lead to false-negative results during bacterial detection. Similarly, if you're on blood thinners such as aspirin or clopidogrel, consult your doctor about stopping them 3–5 days in advance to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding during biopsy.

4. Use throat numbing medication on the day of the exam

When you arrive at the endoscopy center, be sure to take the oral anesthetic provided—such as lidocaine or dyclonine. This helps numb your throat and reduces discomfort and gagging during the procedure.

5. Reschedule if you have a recent illness

If you've had a recent upper respiratory infection, nasal congestion, or a sore throat, consider postponing your gastroscopy. These conditions can increase discomfort and make the procedure more challenging.
