How To Deal With Stomach Flu

The stomach flu, often caused by viral infections, primarily affects the gastrointestinal system. Unlike the common cold or influenza, which mainly impact the respiratory system, stomach flu leads to discomfort in the digestive tract and can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In mild cases of the common cold or flu that come with a reduced appetite, it's best to stick to bland, easily digestible foods.

When the illness is caused by norovirus, it typically presents with acute gastroenteritis symptoms. These may include severe nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that can last for an entire day. During this time, eating solid food may not be advisable. If tolerated, drinking warm sugar-salt water can help maintain hydration. However, consuming anything else—especially raw fruits, cold foods, or irritating substances—should be avoided. In more severe cases, intravenous fluids are necessary to replenish lost water, glucose, and electrolytes.

There are generally two types of gastrointestinal colds. The first type involves the common cold affecting the whole body and secondarily impacting the digestive system. In these cases, patients can usually tolerate light meals. The second type, like norovirus-induced gastroenteritis, requires fasting and only small sips of oral fluids if tolerated. Medical care often includes intravenous hydration and the use of antispasmodic medications to relieve cramping and discomfort.

It's important to monitor symptoms closely and seek medical attention if dehydration or severe pain occurs. Proper rest and hydration remain key to recovery from any form of stomach flu.
