Gastrointestinal flu, commonly known as stomach flu, typically presents with symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In most cases, it does not come with a fever. However, in more severe instances, a mild fever may occur. When fever is present, it is important to consider other potential underlying conditions such as kidney issues, heart-related complications, or even viral encephalitis. It's crucial not to assume that fever is solely due to gastrointestinal flu without proper medical evaluation.

If a patient experiences fever alongside typical gastrointestinal symptoms, doctors often perform blood tests to check for elevated white blood cell counts, which could indicate a bacterial infection rather than a simple viral stomach bug. While most cases of gastrointestinal flu are caused by viruses and do not require antibiotics, the presence of high fever and abnormal blood results may suggest the need for further intervention.

When bacterial infection is confirmed through lab results showing increased white blood cells and neutrophils, antibiotic treatment may be necessary. For patients without signs of bacterial infection, management focuses on relieving gastrointestinal discomfort, maintaining hydration, and following a bland diet. Avoiding spicy or irritating foods is highly recommended during recovery.

In addition to symptom relief, monitoring fluid intake is essential, especially for individuals experiencing severe diarrhea. Dehydration can quickly become a serious issue, particularly in young children and elderly adults. Oral rehydration solutions or intravenous fluids may be required in extreme cases to restore electrolyte balance.
