Gastrointestinal Endoscopy Preparation Guidelines
If you are scheduled for a standard gastrointestinal endoscopy, it is typically required to fast for 6–8 hours prior to the procedure. Doctors usually advise patients not to eat after 8 p.m. the night before the exam, although small sips of water are allowed until two hours before the procedure. This helps ensure that the stomach and intestines are as empty as possible, allowing for clearer visualization during the examination.
For a pain-free endoscopy, which involves intravenous sedation, pre-procedure preparation is even more critical. Patients must avoid solid or semi-solid foods for at least four hours before the exam and should remain completely fasting—both from food and liquids—for at least three hours beforehand. In many clinical settings, medical professionals recommend complete fasting for at least two hours before the procedure. If patients experience dry mouth, they may take a couple of small sips of water, but the total amount should not exceed 150 ml.
Additionally, if you're undergoing a colonoscopy, your doctor may recommend a low-residue diet for one to three days before the exam. This dietary restriction helps minimize residue in the bowel, making the cleansing process more effective and improving the accuracy of the results. Following these guidelines closely can significantly enhance the effectiveness and safety of the endoscopic procedure.
