Prognosis and Long-Term Outlook

With prompt and accurate treatment, many patients recover fully, especially those with viral meningitis. Bacterial cases have a higher mortality rate but outcomes improve dramatically when treated early. Long-term follow-up may be needed to monitor for cognitive deficits, hearing problems, or motor impairments. Vaccination against pneumococcus, meningococcus, and Hib has significantly reduced the incidence of bacterial meningitis in many countries.
