Which Acupuncture Points Are Beneficial for Anxiety

Anxiety, according to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), is often caused by emotional blockages and a disruption of mental peace. By stimulating specific acupressure points, individuals can experience relief from anxiety, improved emotional regulation, and a calmer mind. There are six key acupressure points that are particularly effective: Laogong (PC8), Neiguan (PC6), Shenmen (HT7), Yintang (EX-HN3), Baihui (GV20), and Yongquan (KI1).

1. Laogong Point (PC8)

Location: The Laogong point is located in the center of the palm. When you clench your fist, it can be found beneath the tip of the middle finger.

Function: This point belongs to the Pericardium Meridian and is known for clearing heart fire and calming the mind. Stimulating Laogong can help reduce emotional tension and promote a sense of inner peace.

2. Neiguan Point (PC6)

Location: Situated on the inner forearm, the Neiguan point lies two inches above the wrist crease, between the two tendons.

Function: This point is widely used for calming the heart and relieving anxiety, nausea, and insomnia. It is especially helpful for those who experience anxiety accompanied by heart palpitations or digestive discomfort.

3. Shenmen Point (HT7)

Location: Found on the crease of the wrist, on the little finger side, just beside the tendon of the flexor carpi ulnaris muscle.

Function: As its name suggests, "Shenmen" means "Spirit Gate," and this point is renowned for its ability to calm the mind, improve sleep quality, and reduce stress and anxiety.

4. Yintang Point (EX-HN3)

Location: Located at the midpoint between the two eyebrows, right on the forehead.

Function: Yintang is a powerful point for relieving mental tension, headaches, and emotional distress. It helps bring clarity to the mind and is often used in relaxation techniques.

5. Baihui Point (GV20)

Location: This point is found at the top of the head, where a line connecting the tips of both ears intersects with the midline of the head.

Function: Baihui is known for uplifting the spirit and calming the mind. When used in combination with Yintang, it enhances mental clarity and emotional stability, making it ideal for chronic anxiety and fatigue.

6. Yongquan Point (KI1)

Location: Located on the sole of the foot, the Yongquan point can be found in the depression that forms when curling the toes downward.

Function: Known as the "Bubbling Spring" point, Yongquan is essential for grounding the body, calming the mind, and restoring energy. It's particularly useful for anxiety accompanied by restlessness or hyperactivity.
