The pituitary gland, often referred to as the "master gland" of the endocrine system, is divided into two main parts: the anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis) and the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis). Each section plays a unique and essential role in regulating various bodily functions.
Functions of the Anterior Pituitary
The anterior pituitary is responsible for producing and secreting several key hormones that influence growth, metabolism, and reproductive functions. Functions of the Posterior Pituitary
The posterior pituitary does not produce hormones itself but stores and releases two important hormones—oxytocin and vasopressin (also known as antidiuretic hormone or ADH). Oxytocin plays a vital role in childbirth by stimulating uterine contractions and also supports lactation after delivery. Vasopressin helps regulate blood pressure by controlling the amount of water retained by the kidneys, thus maintaining fluid balance in the body.
