Patients may also experience diplopia (double vision) and crossed paralysis, where one side of the body is paralyzed along with the opposite side of the face. In more severe cases, symptoms can escalate to difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), choking while drinking, and even coma or quadriplegia.
Life-Threatening Complications
If left untreated, cerebral hypoperfusion can lead to cerebral infarction—a type of ischemic stroke caused by a prolonged lack of blood flow to the brain. Other serious complications may include central hyperthermia (abnormally high body temperature due to brain injury), stress ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract, and decerebrate rigidity, a state of severe muscle rigidity associated with brainstem damage. These complications can significantly increase the risk of long-term disability or death.
