Sleep Disturbances

One of the most characteristic physical symptoms of depression is disrupted sleep, particularly early morning awakening. This refers to waking up much earlier than usual—often at least two hours before the typical wake-up time—and being unable to fall back asleep. This disturbance affects sleep continuity and can leave individuals feeling unrested and exhausted.

Loss of Appetite

Another common physical symptom is a significant decrease in appetite. Those experiencing depression may feel no desire to eat, may not feel hungry, and may eat only out of necessity to keep their body functioning. Food may seem tasteless, and once-enjoyable meals no longer bring pleasure or satisfaction.

Decreased Energy and Fatigue

People with depression often report a persistent lack of energy and physical exhaustion. Even without engaging in any activity, they may feel drained and overwhelmed. Some describe a heavy, leaden feeling in their limbs, particularly in the legs, along with a general sense of mental fatigue and sluggishness.

These changes may be related to altered pain perception linked to depression.

Other common complaints include dizziness, lightheadedness, chest tightness, heart palpitations, nausea, and digestive issues like bloating or constipation. While these symptoms may not be directly caused by depression, they often intensify during depressive episodes and can significantly impact daily functioning.
