Liver Function Test Values For Cirrhosis Patients

In normal adult liver function tests, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) or alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels are typically below 40 U/L. However, assessing liver cirrhosis involves more than just monitoring transaminase levels. It is equally important to examine total bilirubin, direct and indirect bilirubin, albumin, and total protein levels to understand the progression of cirrhosis.

These biomarkers provide insight into different aspects of liver health and damage. For example, elevated bilirubin levels may indicate impaired liver function, while low albumin levels can suggest decreased liver synthetic capacity. In addition to blood tests, imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI are essential for evaluating the structural changes in the liver.

Imaging techniques help determine the stage of liver disease and guide treatment decisions. While liver function tests can indicate whether there is ongoing hepatocellular damage, they do not provide a complete picture of the patient's overall condition. A comprehensive approach combining laboratory and imaging assessments is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of cirrhosis.
