Relief of Cardiac Tamponade

In cases of infected pericardial fluid, drainage is combined with the direct infusion of appropriate antibiotics into the pericardial space to enhance local treatment efficacy. Similarly, for patients with recurrent effusions due to cancer, chemotherapy or other targeted agents may be administered directly into the pericardial cavity to reduce fluid accumulation and control disease progression.

Prior to performing pericardiocentesis, it is essential to conduct a thorough evaluation using echocardiography. This imaging modality allows clinicians to assess the volume of fluid around the heart, identify the optimal puncture site, and minimize the risk of complications. Real-time ultrasound guidance during the procedure further enhances safety and accuracy, ensuring effective drainage while avoiding injury to surrounding structures.
