Is Gastric Ulcer Serious And How To Treat It

Gastric ulcers are considered a more severe condition compared to other common stomach issues like gastritis or superficial mucosal erosion. While many people are familiar with terms such as gastric inflammation and gastric erosion, it's important to understand that erosion is generally less severe than an ulcer. When the damage reaches the muscularis mucosae layer of the stomach lining, it is classified as an ulcer. Gastric ulcers can lead to serious complications including gastrointestinal bleeding, perforation, obstruction, and even cancerous changes. If any of these complications occur, the situation becomes significantly more complex and requires immediate medical attention.

The first step in treating a gastric ulcer involves undergoing a C13 or C14 breath test to determine if there is an infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). This bacterium is the leading cause of gastric ulcers, affecting over 70% of patients diagnosed with the condition. Without proper eradication of H. pylori, ulcers tend to recur and may become chronic. In cases where the bacteria are present, a standard four-drug regimen known as quadruple therapy is recommended for effective treatment.

For patients without H. pylori infection, several medication options are available to manage symptoms and promote healing. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as rabeprazole, omeprazole, and pantoprazole are commonly prescribed to reduce acid production in the stomach. Additionally, medications that protect and heal the stomach lining—like Rebamipide, teprenone, and traditional remedies such as Kangfuxin Liquid—are often used alongside PPIs.

It's important to note that the treatment duration for gastric ulcers is typically longer than for other gastrointestinal conditions, usually ranging from 6 to 8 weeks. Some individuals may require even more time to fully recover. Consistent follow-up with a healthcare provider and adherence to prescribed therapies are crucial for successful outcomes.
