Ectopic premature heartbeats, also known as premature contractions, occur when the heart's electrical impulses originate from areas outside the sinoatrial (SA) node. Normally, the SA node, which is the heart's natural pacemaker, controls the heart rhythm by sending regular electrical signals to the atria and ventricles. However, in some cases, other regions of the heart such as the atria, ventricles, or the atrioventricular (AV) junction can trigger early heartbeats, leading to what is medically referred to as premature beats.

Types of Ectopic Premature Beats

There are three primary types of ectopic premature heartbeats: atrial premature contractions (APCs), ventricular premature contractions (VPCs), and junctional premature contractions. Each type is classified based on where the abnormal heartbeat originates within the heart's structure. These early beats can feel like a fluttering or skipped beat in the chest and are often harmless when they occur infrequently.

Are Ectopic Beats Common?

Yes, ectopic premature beats are relatively common and can occur in individuals with otherwise healthy hearts. In most cases, they happen sporadically and do not indicate a serious underlying condition. However, if these premature contractions become frequent, occur in succession, or are accompanied by symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath, or chest pain, further medical evaluation is recommended.
