Interestingly, official CPR guidelines do not specify whether the left or right hand should be placed on top during chest compressions. The emphasis is not on which hand is above, but rather on delivering high-quality compressions consistently and effectively.

Four Key Elements of High-Quality Chest Compressions

To ensure optimal outcomes during CPR, it's essential to focus on the following four aspects of chest compressions:

1. Compression Rate

For adults, aim for a compression rate of 100 to 120 per minute. In the case of children, the recommended rate is at least 100 compressions per minute. Maintaining this pace helps simulate the heart's natural rhythm and supports circulation.

2. Compression Depth

Compress the adult chest to a depth of 5 to 6 centimeters. For children, the recommended depth is approximately 5 cm, while for infants, it should be around 4 cm. Proper depth ensures adequate blood flow while minimizing the risk of injury.

3. Allow Full Chest Recoil

After each compression, allow the chest to fully recoil. This step is crucial as it enables the heart to refill with blood before the next compression, maintaining effective circulation.

4. Maintain Contact and Minimize Interruptions

Keep the heel of your hand in constant contact with the chest wall throughout the compression cycle. Avoid lifting your hands between compressions to ensure continuity and reduce pauses, which can significantly impact the effectiveness of CPR.
