How Long Can You Live with a Stomach Ulcer?

Most people diagnosed and treated appropriately for a stomach ulcer can expect to live a normal lifespan. With proper medical care, individuals with gastric ulcers can lead healthy lives and potentially live well into their 80s or 90s. The primary cause of gastric ulcers is Helicobacter pylori infection, although in some cases, long-term use of certain medications or excessive alcohol consumption can also contribute to the condition by damaging the protective lining of the stomach.

When the damage extends deep into the mucosal layer of the stomach, it is classified as a gastric ulcer. Based on this understanding, treatment typically involves a combination approach known as quadruple therapy to eliminate H. pylori. This includes acid-suppressing medications and protective agents that coat the stomach lining. With a treatment duration of 6–8 weeks, more than 80% of gastric ulcers can heal successfully.

Once healed, gastric ulcers generally do not have a significant impact on life expectancy. However, it's important to be cautious—some ulcers may be malignant from the start or could indicate more serious conditions such as gastric lymphoma or stomach cancer. Doctors often recommend a follow-up endoscopy after treatment to confirm healing and rule out any underlying malignancy.

Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and regular follow-up are key to managing gastric ulcers effectively and ensuring long-term health. Ignoring symptoms or delaying treatment could increase the risk of complications, including bleeding or perforation, which might require urgent medical intervention.
