Endocarditis Symptoms: Understanding the Key Indicators

Endocarditis, an infection of the inner lining of the heart chambers and valves, presents with a variety of symptoms that can be categorized into three main groups: signs of infection, heart-related manifestations, and symptoms caused by embolism.

Signs of Infection

One of the primary indicators of endocarditis is fever, which reflects the body's response to infection. Patients often experience elevated body temperature, accompanied by chills, fatigue, and general weakness. These symptoms arise due to the presence of bacteria or other infectious agents inflaming the endocardium, leading to a systemic inflammatory response.

Heart-Related Manifestations

Endocarditis can significantly affect heart function, especially the heart valves. In many cases, patients develop heart murmurs—abnormal heart sounds caused by turbulent blood flow. Infected growths on the heart valves, known as vegetations, can break loose and travel through the bloodstream, potentially blocking blood flow to vital organs. This can lead to complications such as stroke if the brain is affected, kidney damage if the renal arteries are involved, or even organ dysfunction in other areas like the spleen or lungs.
