Can Gastric Ulcers Be Cured?

Gastric ulcers, which result from damage to the stomach lining due to various pathological factors, can be effectively treated and even fully healed with proper medical care. When left untreated or when ulcers recur frequently, the repeated cycles of tissue damage and repair may lead to intestinal metaplasia. In more severe cases involving advanced intestinal metaplasia or atypical hyperplasia, there is an increased risk that these lesions may progress into gastric cancer, making them potentially precancerous conditions.

A standard treatment plan for gastric ulcers typically includes a combination of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and gastric mucosal protectants. With consistent therapy over approximately two months, the majority of ulcers can be completely resolved. It's also crucial to address any underlying infections, particularly Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), which is a major contributing factor to ulcer development.

If H. pylori infection is present, eradication therapy should be added to the treatment regimen. This approach not only enhances the healing process but also significantly reduces the likelihood of ulcer recurrence and lowers the long-term risk of developing stomach cancer. Early diagnosis and comprehensive management are key to achieving the best outcomes for patients with gastric ulcers.
