Heart muscle ischemia occurs when the coronary arteries fail to supply adequate oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle, leading to insufficient support for its normal function. In some cases, the problem lies not in the large coronary arteries but in the smaller blood vessels that supply the heart. This condition, known as microvascular disease, can occur even when the major arteries appear normal. When the tiny vessels that nourish the heart muscle become damaged or constricted, it can impair blood flow and cause ischemia, often resulting in symptoms similar to those seen in traditional coronary artery disease.
