How to Care for Children with Myocarditis
Myocarditis in children is often caused by viral infections, and with proper care and treatment, most children can fully recover. During the illness, providing appropriate care plays a critical role in the child's recovery process.
Rest and Recovery
During the acute phase of the disease, it is essential for the child to remain in bed rest for approximately 2 to 4 weeks. Even after the acute phase subsides, continued rest for 2 to 3 months is recommended. For children diagnosed with cardiac enlargement, a longer recovery period of up to 6 months to a year may be necessary to allow the heart to heal properly.
Nutrition and Diet
A well-balanced diet rich in high-quality protein is crucial during recovery. Encourage the child to consume plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits which are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. It is important to avoid spicy, oily, or overly processed foods that may stress the digestive system and weaken immunity.
Physical Activity Guidelines
Once the child begins to recover, light physical activity can be gradually reintroduced. However, strenuous exercise or intense sports should be strictly avoided as they may place unnecessary strain on the heart and weaken the immune system.
Preventing Infections
Preventing secondary infections, especially viral infections, is one of the most important aspects of care during the recovery phase. Parents should ensure the child wears a mask when going outdoors and avoids crowded public places where germs can easily spread. Maintaining good hygiene and limiting contact with sick individuals can significantly reduce the risk of reinfection.
