COPD Combined With Heart Failure: Symptoms And Progression

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) can often coexist with heart failure, particularly affecting the right side of the heart. This combination presents in two distinct stages: compensated and decompensated pulmonary heart function.

Compensated Stage Symptoms

During the compensated phase, individuals may experience persistent coughing, mucus production, and shortness of breath. These symptoms typically worsen with physical activity. Patients may also encounter heart palpitations, increased breathlessness, fatigue, and a noticeable decrease in exercise tolerance.

Decompensated Stage Symptoms

In the decompensated phase, symptoms become more severe and pronounced. Shortness of breath intensifies significantly, often accompanied by headaches, insomnia, and daytime drowsiness. In advanced cases, pulmonary encephalopathy may develop, leading to symptoms such as apathy, confusion, delirium, or even coma.

Physical Signs To Watch For

Additional physical manifestations include cyanosis of the lips, conjunctival congestion and swelling, facial redness, and excessive sweating. These signs indicate worsening respiratory and cardiovascular function and require prompt medical attention.
