Arrhythmia is a broad term that refers to any abnormality in the heart's rhythm. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a specific type of arrhythmia characterized by rapid and irregular heartbeats. While AFib is one of the most common forms of arrhythmia, others include sinus tachycardia, sinus bradycardia, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, atrioventricular block, and pre-excitation syndromes such as Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.

In atrial fibrillation, the normal P waves seen on an electrocardiogram (ECG) are replaced by irregular, fibrillatory waves known as "f" waves. These occur at a frequency ranging from 350 to 600 beats per minute. In contrast, other types of arrhythmias may be asymptomatic or present with more generalized symptoms like dizziness, weakness, or even syncope (temporary loss of consciousness).

Accurate differentiation between AFib and other arrhythmias is essential for appropriate treatment. While some arrhythmias may not require immediate intervention, AFib is often associated with a higher risk of stroke and may necessitate anticoagulation therapy and rhythm control strategies.
