Angina Pain Location And Its Affected Areas

Angina typically manifests in the chest area, specifically in the region known as the precordium, which corresponds to the upper and middle parts of the sternum. The affected area is generally about the size of a palm, though its boundaries are often unclear. Since the heart is primarily located on the left side of the chest, the pain can radiate to other areas such as the left shoulder, the inner side of the left arm, and even reach the ring finger and little finger. In some cases, the discomfort may extend to the throat, neck, and jaw.

Characteristics Of Angina Pain

The sensation experienced during angina is not typically sharp or stabbing. Instead, individuals often describe it as a feeling of pressure, tightness, or heaviness in the chest. Some may also experience a burning sensation. This discomfort usually causes the person to instinctively stop whatever activity they were engaged in until the symptoms subside.

Pain Duration And Relief

An angina episode usually lasts between 3 to 5 minutes, and rarely exceeds 15 minutes. The discomfort can be effectively relieved by rest or the sublingual administration of nitroglycerin, a commonly prescribed medication for angina relief. It's important to note that if the pain persists beyond the usual duration or becomes more severe, it may signal a more serious cardiac event requiring immediate medical attention.
